How to Make a “How-To” Video

Learning how to make a how-to video is very important if you want to go teach people how to do something. That might sound like common sense, but there are still way too many people who are sticking with outdated methods of creating tutorials. The written word can be great — but video is often better for the fast-paced world of the Internet.

The first step in making a how-to video is planning. This part is very easy if you already know what your tutorial is going to be about. Simply write down the steps that people need to take, because this will help you spell things out more clearly for those who will eventually view your video.

After you’ve written down these steps, you need to get the technology in order. If you are filming yourself you have to make sure you have a video camcorder. If you’re filming something on your computer screen you need to make sure you have a good video capture software. A popular selection for Windows is Camtasia software. Mac users do very well with “I Show U”.

Now, before you actually start filming yourself, you’re going to need to practice your tutorial. It’s even better if you can practice in front of someone you trust to be honest with you. Sometimes we think we are being very clear, when in fact what we were saying is not getting across all! After you are sure that your steps are clear, you can begin filming (this is the fun part!).

As you’re making your how-to video, make sure you are enunciating clearly and not missing any steps at all. That’s why it’s so helpful to make sure you have a written document right in front of you to follow. Remember — your how-to video is being created for people who have no idea how to do what you’re teaching.

Your final step is to watch your video and follow it exactly. Don’t rely on what you know in your head, you need to follow what is in the video. This will ensure that your viewers are able to follow the process as well. If you can follow it step-by-step, you will have succeeded in learning how to make a how-to video that your viewers will get a ton of value from.

A good example of this process in action is our free Video Marketing Training Series.
